CHAPTER 3: AMATERASU
JAPANESE GODDESS OF THE SUN
Individual: AMATERASU
Her whole name, Amaterasu-ōmikami, means "the great august Goddess who shines in the heaven".
The oldest tales of Amaterasu come from the ca. 680 AD Kojiki Amaterasu became the ruler of the sky and the heavens along with her brother, Tsukuyomi. Originally, Amaterasu shared the sky with Tsukuyomi, until he killed the Goddess of food. This upset Amaterasu causing her to label Tsukuyomi an evil God and she split away from him; He became God of the moon and the night, Amaterasu became Goddess of the day and the Sun, separating night from day.
The long-standing rivalry between Amaterasu and her brother Tsukuyomi, the God of the moon, is why they are never seen in the sky together.
