Cacao has been cultivated for at least three millennia in Central and South America. Cacao beans were used as currency to buy goods and to pay taxes. Chocolate played a special role in both Maya and Aztec royal and religious events. Ixcacao is the Mayan Goddess of chocolate and especially the cocoa harvest. Mayans would pray to her and give offerings for the blessing of a rich and fruitful cocoa harvest.
